We come across the term Intelligence
quotient, (IQ) very often. It is a very widely used quotient to measure ones
intelligence and all related stuffs. In the past, it was one of the main
criteria to select a person with high IQ for a higher positioned job and so on.
But in the present days its being replaced by something known as Emotional
quotient.
In the workforce today, businesses
are now structured in a way that almost everyone has some level of decision
making ability. Whether the decisions are big or small, they have a direct
impact on how successful, efficient and effective individuals are on the job.
As a result, it is becoming more
and more important for employees to focus on and improve their decision making
abilities. This may seem as simple as learning from our mistakes, but it really
starts at a much deeper level. Making better decisions starts with
understanding your own Emotional Quotient. Emotional Quotient is the ability to
sense, understand and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions to
facilitate high levels of collaboration and productivity.
It is a measurement of a person's
ability to monitor his or her emotions, to cope with pressures and demands, and
to control his or her thoughts and actions. The ability to assess and affect
situations and relationships with other people also plays a role in emotional
intelligence.
Emotional
Quotient is important because it helps you leverage your awareness of emotions
for effectiveness in the workplace
There are 5
areas of emotional quotient, they are -
•Self-Awareness – The ability to
recognize and understand your moods, emotions and drives, as well as their
effect on others.
•Self-Regulation – The ability to control or re-direct disruptive impulses and moods and the propensity to suspend judgment and think before acting.
•Motivation – A passion to work for reasons that go beyond money and status and a propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistence.

•Social Skills – A proficiency
in managing relationships and building networks.
•Empathy – The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people.

And a simple emotional quotient test
can let us know the EQ of any person. The one who is with a high emotional
quotient is expected to be emotionally very strong, the one who is able to
control his moods, has sort of motivation, mingles with others and gets to know
them better. And vice versa in respect of people with low EQ.
Its not a difficult thing to improve
the EQ of oneself, with few good inspiration and good practices one can
definitely improve the emotion handling capacity of oneself
